Tawny chargers brayed nervously, their manes flying wildly in an intense pre-battle zephyr. As the battle horn blared across the field, the beasts were urged into motion. Two opposing forces clashed with the raucous of shield on sword. Good men were slain in the fray, but nothing could be done.
There was not a sound to be heard
other than the steady patter of rain.
Wind howled through leafless trees
And battered a creaking weather vane.
Across the windswept yard stood a lonely manor,
Seemingly lifeless in this ebon twilight hour
Within the solemn walls, there dwelt a single man
A man who stood alone, his attention upon a flower.
A wilting rose set with a note now sat in disarray,
The object shunned for days on end as if it held a curse.
The note was read and disregarded,
The recipient left feeling worse.
For the note held words from the love he'd lost
And he knew them to be true
Upon his reading of the final words,
Simply: I will always love you.
The fault was his, he did not deny
That he'd forced her away, out of his life.
But the words of his lover still caused him pain.
Words of the truth he would never hear again.
